Understanding a URL

What is url?
For some people this may be an obvious answer. For others who are new to the rapidly growing and changing internet it is not so obvious.

The letters URL are an acronym for the term" Uniform Resource Locator". I layman's term it is know as a "web address". This is the address in which computers and documents on the Internet can be located.

An Example:

Let's say you are looking for you jacket. It is in your closet in your room. The URL would be: my house/my room/closet
Or you kid is play ant a friends house in the back yard his URL would be at joe's house/ backyard

Now let's use a real URL to further explain.

I want to share a file with my daughter who is in another city so I upload it and give her the internet file location...the URL.
so the URL I would give her is my file server name / the file name and now she can access the file. When you buy a domain name it takes the place if your file server name. So if my domain name is mom's things then the URL would be mom's things / the file name.
